Disaster Relief Donations

9/11. Katrina. Rita. Wilma. Ike.

There are very few words which invoke deeper emotion. These disaster's brought indescribable physical ravage and devastation to countless victims and emotional injury to us all. The incredible shock of 9/11 is seared in our memories as though it happened yesterday. The lasting effect of the high winds, rains and floods of recent hurricanes continues to haunt their victims as they return to what's left of their homes. The people returning may be the lucky ones. Many others lost more than their belongings. They lost their loved ones; husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, and children.

So often, after the shock of events such as these, we have a tendency to return to business as usual. However, for many families affected by disaster, it will never be "business as usual." We must continue our efforts to remain prepared for disaster relief in North America. What can we do?

1.  Pray!

The most powerful thing we can do is pray. Begin praying for:

a.  those who are suffering due to loss of family members

b.  healing for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of the victims and families

c.  safety for those who are responding to crisis

d.  wisdom and knowledge of how to respond

e.  those who’ve been displaced

2.  Volunteer!

There is always something to be done before, during, and after times of crisis.

a.  The North America Presbyter's Office is coordinating with the Texas State Office relief and volunteer efforts for our churches, members and friends. To register your name and contact information, please email nagp@cogop.org. Or, you may want to...

b.  Contact a local disaster program or active disaster relief faith group now.

c.  Become better prepared. Seek training before another crisis begins.

d.  Volunteer in the local emergency food and shelter facility.

3.  Donate!

Your donations help provide:

a.  Food

b. Water

c. Shelter

d. Medical assistance

e. Recovery and rebuilding costs

Prayer support, counseling, giving of money, supplies, work teams...the list of needs is endless. Are you willing to make a difference in the lives of those who have encountered these tragedies? If it were your family, your children, your parents, your brother or sister, would you reach out to them? Dedicate your resources to an on-going commitment to help rebuild lives. The life affected might just be your own one day.

Just as the effects of these disasters are long-term, our commitment as fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord must turn to long-term response. Local churches, individuals and organizations must become committed. We encourage you to pray for the Lord's direction.

Online donations are now being accepted for Hurricane Ike Relief.
