| Constrained But Not Crushed: The Church in Cuba by David Bryan, Global Outreach Ministries Director, retha@cogop.org |
| The island nation of Cuba is the only communist country remaining in the Western hemisphere. Its governmental system imposes many restrictions on the people. For instance, we cannot hold any type of religious event in Cuba, except in areas that have been pre-approved by the government. A church cannot make any kind of alteration, expansion or repair to its building without prior authorization of the government. No church can invite a foreign evangelist without a government-authorized religious visa. In Cuba, all properties belong to the State. A citizen cannot own more than one home and if he wishes to sell it he can only sell it to the State and the State determines the sales price. You cannot move from one city to another without the State's permission and you have to explain why you want to move. Parents must be careful and not speak ill of the government, even with their spouses and children. In spite of the difficult environment the church continues to function and has many activities including regular services, national conventions, youth camps, missionary retreats, and seminars. Do not forget to pray for the strengthening of our wonderful brothers and sisters on the island of Cuba. Your prayers and support are vital. |
